About My Sober Path

I am Eric. I’m 57 years old, a Director of Operations by day, and I’ve been sober for 18 years.

I didn’t go to a luxury rehab in the mountains, and I didn’t rely on AA as my only tool. I just woke up one morning after 25 years of drinking, looked at the wreckage, and decided my life was going to be short if things didn’t change.

I got sober by applying a practical structure along with determination. I figured out how to rebuild, one quiet decision at a time.

Most sobriety writing focuses on the crisis—the quitting, the first 30 days, the withdrawals. But not many talk about what happens 5, 10, or 18 years later. Nobody talks about the stillness, the uncertainty, and one-off challenges associated with the new life you created.

That is what this Substack is about.

It’s a quiet, honest look at long-term sobriety. It’s for the person who has stopped the chaos but is now staring at their life wondering, “Now what?”

If you are looking for a preachy 12-step lecture, you won’t find it here. If you are looking for practical, common-sense ways to build a life that makes you want to stay, you are in the right place.
